EASYJET INCREASES CAPACITY AND CONFIRMS
NEW ROUTE AT NEWCASTLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

26th April 2012
easyJet, Newcastle’s largest airline, has welcomed the arrival of a new £20m Airbus A320 aircraft today (26 April) which will increase capacity on its routes from the North East airport.

To commemorate the occasion easyJet’s 200th bespoke orange A320 has arrived for the inaugural flight later today which departs for the sunnier climes of Faro.

The permanent introduction of the A320 into easyJet’s Newcastle fleet means the airline is now able to provide an additional 50,000 seats on its year-round schedule to its North East passengers.

The extra seats have already gone on sale to provide additional capacity on popular summer holiday and city break routes from Newcastle including Alicante, Barcelona, Belfast, Bristol, Faro, Ibiza, Majorca, Malaga, Malta, Menorca, Nice and Paris.

The arrival of the A320 also coincides with easyJet announcing it will begin a year-round service to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport from Newcastle, with the inaugural flight departing on 13 December 2012. Flights to Amsterdam will depart up to five times a week.

easyJet announcement on its Madrid base

20th June 2012
easyJet today announced that after a thorough review of its Madrid operations it proposes to cease basing crew and aircraft at Madrid from Winter 2012/13. easyJet intends to continue to serve Spain but to do so differently by moving its aircraft to other easyJet bases around its European network which will deliver higher returns for the airline.

The Madrid base is delivering returns below all of easyJet’s other bases. This is due to a combination of over capacity in the Spanish airline market, leading to low revenue per passenger, combined with high airport charges which have more than doubled in the last two years and will be subject to further above inflation increases in the coming years.

easyJet remains committed to Spain, including Madrid, and will continue to fly to and from Spain out of its bases across Europe. While easyJet proposes to reduce its capacity to and from Madrid by around 20% in the next financial year, the reduction to and from Spain will be 7%. After the proposed changes easyJet expects to carry over 12 million passengers to and from Spain next year.

70% of passengers on easyJet’s Spanish flights start their journey from other parts of Europe and demand from these passengers remains strong. Madrid based customers will also continue to benefit from easyJet’s services after the proposed transfer as easyJet will operate to Madrid from many of Europe’s most popular cities. easyJet operates over 200 aircraft across 23 bases in the UK and mainland Europe.

The airline is now reviewing a range of options for its eight Madrid based aircraft and 310 crew. All of easyJet’s pilots and cabin crew in Madrid will be offered a job in the airline’s other bases and easyJet hopes to retain as many of its people as possible. easyJet will discuss the proposal with the easyJet European Works Council and the local employee representatives as appropriate.

Any restructuring costs arising out of this proposal will be accounted for in the current financial year. The market price of jet fuel has fallen since easyJet’s outlook statement set out in its Half Year Results statement of 9 May 2012. Assuming the current fuel price environment continues for the remainder of the year, the benefit from lower fuel prices should fully offset any restructuring costs. Consequently management expectations for profit before tax for the financial year ending 30 September 2012 remain unchanged.

easyJet expects its capacity to increase by around 5% in the year ending September 2012, compared to 2011, and to continue to grow in the next financial year. easyJet's strategy of low fares and our focus on making it easy for our customers, aligned with tight cost management and strictly managed allocation of capital, ensures that easyJet is well positioned to deliver good results for shareholders.

Easyjet's Edinburgh Airport expansion promises jobs boost

  • Two more Easyjet aeroplanes will be based at Edinburgh Airport

30 August 2012
One hundred jobs could be brought to Edinburgh after Easyjet announced plans to base two more aircraft at the capital's airport.

The airline already has five planes based in Edinburgh, flying to 24 destinations, and carrying 2.5 million passengers in the past 12 months.

It has not yet decided where the additional aircraft will fly to. The choice of destinations will be announced in October after discussions with other agencies.

Hugh Aitken, Easyjet's commercial manager for Scotland, told BBC Radio Scotland: "We are doing something quite unique, we're starting to talk to a lot of our partners, Scottish Enterprise and VisitScotland and others about where they see the opportunities, where they see the markets that are underserved or have potential to grow in and out of Scotland and how they can support us with that."

He hinted that the destinations would be European. "Absolutely, that's our foot print", he said. Mr Aitken agreed that Edinburgh had great "inbound potential".

He added: "On some of our routes well over 50% of the people are coming in to Scotland - so that's about tourists coming in to Scotland and visiting the country. You can imagine there will be other places with that potential."

However he explained that the airline would also be looking at outbound destinations "that need new capacity brand new or other areas with potential to grow".

"It's about connecting Scottish businesses and leisure travellers with where they want to go to and flying directly rather than having to go through the hub airports," he said.

Heathrow
At the moment, Easyjet does not fly to or from Heathrow and Mr Aitken claimed there was "a real preoccupation with Heathrow". Mr Aitken said: "Everybody talks about any loss of capacity at Heathrow being bad for Scotland."

"In our view we fly to London Luton, Stansted, Gatwick which very often if you're doing business in London it's quicker to fly to those airports than it is to fly to Heathrow plus given that Heathrow is over 90% full, when things go wrong they go wrong very badly."

The airline said although it was investing in Edinburgh it was not ignoring Glasgow and had increased capacity there and introduced new routes over the past year.

easyJet to create 120 jobs as it steps up its presence
at Manchester Airport

  • easyJet boss Carolyn McCall today said the airline planned to increase its presence at Manchester Airport – starting with the creation of 120 jobs.
  • The budget carrier will base a new aircraft at its Manchester hub, which will come into operation from March.

28-August-2012
That will bring the number of planes easyJet has at the gateway to seven and chief executive Ms McCall hinted more could be on their way.

She added the airline hopes to grow the number of business travellers to carries to more than a fifth of all passengers in the coming years.

Ms McCall told the MEN: "I would say we currently don't have as strong a presence in Manchester as I would like."

"We have based aircraft there for four or five years now and do some fantastic routes from Manchester already."

"We are very well known in Liverpool and could become much better known in Manchester and it is very important to us to increase our presence here and show out commitment to the city."

"If you look at how we operate, we do not go in and out of airports, we commit to them over the long term and that is what we intend to do at Manchester."

"We see Manchester as the gateway to the north and have made a commitment to grow in the city, provided the conditions are right."

Easyjet currently offers flights to 26 destinations out of Manchester. Ms McCall said a seventh plane will be added to its fleet at the airport, which will lead to the creation of around 120 jobs. That in turn will service a series of new routes, which will be announced in due course.

Easyjet faces competition at Manchester, following the move by both Ryanair and Flybe to set up bases there. But she said: "We love competition and were born for it."

Ms McCall said increasing the number of business travellers easyJet carries out of Manchester was one of the main opportunities for growth.

She said: "We are very strong on leisure travel but also increasingly strong on business travel."

"One of the opportunities for us here is to build our business network because that is perhaps an area where we are not as strong as we could be."

"Manchester has a great business community and you will start seeing us offer increased frequencies to business city destinations."

"One of our unique selling points is we always fly into primary airports, rather than military airports or ones not close to the city centre and that is what business travellers want."

She added easyjet wanted to increase the proportion on business travellers on its flights to more than 18 per cent.

11-October-2012
easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, has today announced it will bring an additional aircraft to Manchester Airport on 14 February which will see the airline launch five new routes from the airport.

The schedule expansion takes the total number of routes easyJet serves at Manchester Airport to 29 across Europe and the Middle East.

easyJet will be increasing the number of planes it bases at the airport from six to seven with the newest Airbus A319 scheduled to begin operations on 14 February 2013.

25-10-2012
easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, has today been awarded the rights to fly between London and Moscow by the CAA and will launch flights from Spring 2013.

easyJet will operate an Airbus A320 on two services a day between London Gatwick and Moscow Domodedovo airport. Each aircraft will have 180 seats and easyJet expects to fly over 230,000 passengers in its first year of operations.

Carolyn McCall, Chief Executive of easyJet, said:

"easyJet is delighted to have been awarded the rights to fly between London Gatwick and Moscow. We believe this is the right decision for consumers both in the UK and Russia.

“Russia has a fast growing economy and is a country rich in culture and history. We believe that our flights will be popular with both business and leisure travellers alike. easyJet has proved again and again that when we enter a new market we open it up - bringing in competition and lower fares and enabling more people to travel on the route. easyJet awarded the rights to fly
between Milan-Linate and Rome-Fiumicino

26-10-2012
easyJet, Italy’s third largest airline, has today been awarded the rights to fly between Milan Linate airport and Rome Fiumicino airport in a landmark decision by the Italian competition authority (AGCM). As a result, easyJet will launch flights from early 2013 operating Airbus A319s on five services a day between the two airports.

easyJet welcomes the decision by the AGCM to enable competition on this key route between the Italian capital and its commercial centre - arguably the most important route for the Italian economy. Competition will be stimulated as easyJet will allow business and leisure passengers to benefit from lower fares and friendly service on a range of morning and evening departures out of the two cities.

The decision comes the day after the UK’s CAA awarded easyJet the rights to fly between London and Moscow.

easyJet launches two new routes from London Luton Airport

1-November-2012
easyJet, the UK’s largest airline and biggest operator at London Luton Airport, has today announced expansion plans which will see the airline begin flying to the popular Greek resort of Mykonos and the historic Sardinian resort of Olbia, from Summer 2013.

The new route to Olbia will operate twice a week and inaugural flights taking off from 15 May 2013.

Olbia is the gateway to the beautiful white beaches of the northeast Sardinian coast and the glittering Costa Smeralda. Once a little fishing village, it has grown to become Sardinia’s busiest ferry port and a haven for food lovers. Travellers will find fabulous restaurants and piazzas off its cobbled lanes in the old part of town while Olbia’s top cultural landmark is the medieval Pisan-Romanesque church which is hewn out of Galluran granite.

With the addition of today’s new routes, easyJet will now operate 38 routes from London Luton Airport with a comprehensive range of European and Middle Eastern business, city and holiday destinations featuring 2.5 million seats and 16,000 flights up until 8 September 2013.
