easyJet plc announces fleet plans

18 June 2013
Following a highly competitive fleet selection process, easyJet plc ("easyJet" or the "Company") announces that, subject to shareholder approval, it has entered into arrangements (the "New Framework Arrangements") with Airbus S.A.S. ("Airbus") to acquire 35 Current Generation A320 Aircraft for delivery between 2015 and 2017 under its existing agreement and 100 New Generation A320neo Aircraft for delivery from 2017 until 2022, under a new agreement. Under this new agreement, Airbus has also granted the Company the right, but not the obligation, to acquire up to 100 further New Generation A320neo Family Aircraft.

Enhances easyJet’s cost advantage and mitigates against inflationary increases; the 180 seater New Generation A320neo Aircraft is expected to deliver a cost per seat saving of between 11% and 12%, compared to a 156 seater Current Generation A319 Aircraft.

85 of 135 ordered aircraft will be used to replace ageing aircraft as they leave the fleet and return to lessors, with the remaining aircraft used to continue easyJet’s existing strategy of capacity seat growth of between 3% to 5% per annum.

Continues the high level of fleet flexibility provided by the current arrangements. Whilst the announcement today will deliver a fleet of 276 aircraft by 2022, as of today, the new arrangements also give easyJet the ability to manage the fleet size to between 165 and 298 aircraft in 2022 depending on economic conditions and opportunities available.

Total expected fleet acquisition and overhaul expenditure as a percentage of revenue is expected to fall from 18% in the period 2005 to 2012, to 10% to 12% in the period 2018 to 2022.

EasyJet confirma la compra de 135 Airbus 320

11 julio 2013

easyJet to introduce flights from Jersey to London Gatwick

28th-August-2013
easyJet, the UK’s largest airline has today announced it is increasing its Jersey network with the introduction of a year-round service to London Gatwick.

From 30 March 2014 easyJet will operate three flights per day between Jersey and London Gatwick offering the choice of a morning, afternoon and evening departure in each direction. The new service will go on sale in September 2013 and means easyJet now connect Jersey with five UK airports – London Gatwick, Southend, Liverpool, Newcastle and Glasgow.

The announcement follows a deal secured by easyJet earlier this year to purchase 25 additional slots at Gatwick Airport from Flybe. Since this time, the airline has worked closely with the route development team at Jersey Airport to expand its operation in the Island and enhance connections to London Gatwick. The new flight will be operated by an Airbus A319 aircraft with the capacity of 156 seats.

  • Belfast Int. (BFS) - Bordeaux (BOD)
  • Belfast Int. (BFS) - Jersey (JER)

easyJet mark 15th anniversary in Northern Ireland
by announcing two new routes
9th-September-2013
easyJet, Northern Ireland’s largest airline, has today (9 September) celebrated its 15th anniversary at Belfast International Airport by announcing two new routes and staging a water arch salute for arriving aircraft.

From summer 2014 easyJet will introduce new flights to Bordeaux in south west France and Jersey in the Channel Islands. Seats for both routes will go on sale next month and today easyJet held a celebration at the airport with 15 themed cakes and Bordeaux wine.

Since introducing their first flight to London Luton 15 years ago easyJet has flown over 32 million passengers to and from Belfast International Airport and is now Northern Ireland’s largest airline.

Ali Gayward, easyJet’s Head of Northern Ireland, said: “We’re pleased to mark this important anniversary for easyJet by announcing two new routes for Northern Ireland. From summer 2014 we will introduce flights to Bordeaux and Jersey to offer a range of new holiday and business connections to and from Northern Ireland.”

Since we launched our first flight to Belfast in 1998 over 32 million people have chosen to fly with us. Today we’re saying thank you to all those passengers who have helped make easyJet Northern Ireland’s largest airline. Belfast was one of our first bases outside Luton and we look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries here.”

Today easyJet has 6 aircraft based permanently at Belfast International Airport and employs over 200 crew and pilots at the airport. Well over 3 million people fly to and from Belfast International Airport with easyJet annually.

easyJet gets ready to select base #23 – Hamburg Airport

anna.aero 'discovered' the new Hamburg Airport base — #23 — when examining the S14 schedules. We think it will have a shortened list of the "power five" routes — the routes that it thinks every base should have — and maybe services to Antalya and even Moscow.

18-September-2013
easyJet is poised to announce its 23rd European base (20 bases for easyJet, plus Basel and Geneva for easyJet Switzerland), and its second in Germany* (after Berlin Schönefeld) – none other than Hamburg – predicts anna.aero. If proven correct, this will become the LCC’s first base announcement since the opening of London Southend last April. *(Of course, easyJet did have a base at Dortmund Airport between 2004 and 2008, peaking at four based units, but has since dwindled to become just a spoke destination, served only 13 times weekly from London Luton).

Domestic routes unlikely
When entering a new market, LCCs tend to go for routes which are the ‘low-hanging fruit’ – namely those where there is plenty of market to steal from existing operators. Looking at Hamburg’s top 12 routes in terms of weekly seats (which excludes long-haul services to Dubai), many of the ‘low-hanging fruit’ routes, including the top three, are domestic. These city pairs are dominated by airberlin and Lufthansa, and when consulting easyJet’s 36-route network of services from its only other German base — Berlin Schönefeld — not one of them is domestic. On that basis, anna.aero predicts that easyJet will therefore not enter the domestic market from Hamburg, ruling out five of the top 12 (Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart and Cologne).

Source: Innovata / Diio Mi 17-23 September

As easyJet has four London bases already (Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and Southend) it is unlikely that Heathrow will be started from a Hamburg base. The LCC does serve Zurich and Vienna, but as they are airports #65 and #89 in terms of weekly seats (from 131 served airports), they are therefore unlikely to feature when there are more prominent opportunities (neither are served from Berlin Schönefeld). The London Luton-based airline currently does not fly to Istanbul Atatürk, but it does fly to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen, so the former stays on list of potential routes, along with Palma de Mallorca, Paris CDG and Amsterdam, from Hamburg’s top 12 routes, as those being earmarked by anna.aero for the prospective easyJet operation.

Only three of the ‘power five’
In route development meetings, easyJet often refers to the ‘power five’ routesMalaga, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante and Faroas the key routes that every base should have operations to. While the former three routes are likely to be added to the new Hamburg’s base, services to Alicante and Faro are less popular in Germany (neither are served from Berlin Schönefeld) and have therefore been rejected.

Source: Innovata / Diio Mi 17-23 September

Joining up the dots to existing bases like Lisbon, (other bases outside of this top dozen which may be on easyJet’s route wish list might be Milan Malpensa and Geneva) along with services to important network spoke points of Brussels, Copenhagen and Heraklion (all again served from Berlin Schönefeld) would appear to be ‘easy’ decisions to make. More risky would be the suggested Antalya* service, which does feature from three bases already (Basel, London Gatwick and Manchester), but given the size of the potential market and the cultural ties between the two nations it would seem a reasonable suggestion. Rounding out the top dozen would be a link to Moscow*, presumably to Domodedovo as easyJet’s preferred entry point rather than the existing Vnukovo (operated six times weekly by Lufthansa) and Sheremetyevo (daily, Aeroflot) services. *(presumes that easyJet would be gain the necessary permissions to fly these routes).

No base smoke without route fire
This ‘Leak of the Week’ came about when one of our eagle-eyed data elves noticed something curious in the recently released S14 schedules of our orange friends based over at London Luton Airport — an early morning departure from Hamburg to London Gatwick at 0700. Now this might be just a night-stopping aircraft to take advantage of the higher yields that the airline might be attracting from the German-end of the route. However, such a decision to overnight crew away from base is still relatively uncommon in the world of LCCs, but of course easyJet’s business model is looking more like those it initially strove to differentiate itself from – the so-called legacy carriers.

Indeed, the carrier is adding a daily night-stop to its existing Amsterdam – London Gatwick operation for S14. However, the decision to introduce this type of rotation is far more rational, given the fact that the resulting 43 times weekly operation boasts a significantly more congested schedule than the 13 times weekly Hamburg – London Gatwick city pair. Perhaps more convincingly, when looking at the airline’s Hamburg schedules, the aircraft flying this rotation back into Germany would then sit on the ground all day before operating the evening London Gatwick service – an example of very poor aircraft utilisation, unless a base was being mooted.

Six routes already served from Hamburg
According to Innovata historic schedule data for the last 10 years, easyJet has maintained a constant presence at Hamburg since December 2005, when it launched services (no doubt targeting Airbus corporate traffic) from Bristol in the UK (although the route is no longer served). Links to the UK feature highly in the LCC’s existing network from Hamburg, being up until these plans have been revealed, just a spoke from six of the airline’s current 22 hubs. With a possible S14 base launch from 30 March, an announcement could be imminent — perhaps at World Routes in Las Vegas — unless easyJet’s network planning team lose their shirts on the craps tables of course!

easyJet to open a base in Naples in Spring 2014

- Two aircraft based to be in Southern Italy’s largest city offering five new routes to Hamburg, Brussels, Catania, Mykonos and Corfu.

- Up to 2m passengers expected in the first year of operation.

10-10-2013
easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, has announced today its expansion plans in Italy with the opening of a base in Naples. The new base, easyJet’s third in Italy and 24th in its European network, will be operational from spring 2014.

Having first started operations in Naples in 2000, easyJet now carries more passengers than any other airline into and out of Naples. In the last twelve months the airline has flown 1.6 million passengers. From spring, the two aircraft based in Naples will enable easyJet to fly more than an additional 350,000 passengers meaning that annual passenger numbers will reach almost two million.

Mike Campbell, easyJet Europe Director, stated:

"Italy is a key market for easyJet where it has regularly invested and we are delighted to announce that Naples becomes our 3rd Italian base and in Italy’s third largest city."

"Naples is a top European destination both for tourism - the city being listed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO - and for business with a wide network of more than 260,000 companies and 2.6 million business passengers travelling to and from Naples every year."

easyJet will fly 20 routes from the base, five of those will be newly introduced in Spring 2014, and will offer 130 flights a week at peak season from Naples. The airline will fly additional frequencies on key routes such as London Gatwick with two daily flights. easyJet is also now offering “Fast Track” security in Naples for its FLEXIfare customers, making travel even easier by saving time at the Airport.

Last month easyJet announced the opening of another key European base in Hamburg next Spring alongside announcing plans to increase its fleet in Berlin. Building on its success to date in both Hamburg and Berlin, easyJet’s new base will open with three A319 aircraft with the airline increasing its fleet in Berlin by an additional plane.
