Aer Lingus to switch to George Best Belfast City Airport

  • Aer Lingus is planning to switch its operations from Belfast International Airport to Belfast City Airport.

15 June 2012
The move follows the City's loss of bmibaby - which carried 400,000 passengers a year - and gives an indication of the Irish airline's intentions.

Aer Lingus flies to Heathrow and seven European destinations, but it is thought it may expand routes to regional UK airports from the City. This would fill some of the lost bmibaby routes and compete with Flybe. Belfast International Airport has yet to comment on the move.

A spokesperson for George Best Belfast City Airport said: "Following the announcement of the departure of bmibaby we stated that we were confident that we would attract new airlines."

"This position has not changed and we expect to make several announcements in the coming weeks."

"We are certainly not in a position to comment on speculation regarding specific airlines at this stage."

Confirmation from the airline may follow a board meeting next week.

The BBC understands flights could be moved to Belfast City within weeks and that a formal announcement may come in days.

The move will also make George Best Belfast City Airport, Belfast's only Heathrow connection.

With the takeover of BMI by British Airways there had been concerns over that route.

BA has confirmed its commitment to the route but there remains speculation that there may be long-term plans for both airlines to work together on the Belfast-Heathrow connection.

Aer Lingus currently operates flights to Alicante, Barcelona, Faro, Lanzarote, Las Palmas, London Heathrow, Malaga and Tenerife.

Aer Lingus Announces Belfast Move

Thursday, 19 July 2012
Aer Lingus announced from Sunday 28th of October it's moving to Belfast City Airport after an extensive competitive tendering process with Belfast City & Belfast International airports. The opportunity for the RFP was a result of British Airways announcing it was closing the Bmibaby Base at Belfast City following the acquisition of the carrier and subsequent operations review thus creating a void to be filled by another carrier at Belfast City.

The Aer Lingus move underpins it's €100 million investment in Northern Ireland having established a base in Belfast International five years ago and it's commitment to the Northern Ireland market.

This announcement will see the carrier re-structure the Belfast route network accordingly routes to Alicante, Barcelona, Faro, Las Palmas, Lanzorate, Malaga, Tenerife South will cease effective 28th October. The routes to the Canary Islands are apparently being axed due to runway constraints at Belfast City.

Jet2 has announced plans to fill the void in the market with new weekly routes to Lanzorate and Tenerife South commencing on the 4th of November.

The Base fleet two Airbus A319s EI-EPR & EI-EPS will operate from Belfast City Airport to London Gatwick & London Heathrow three times daily thus increasing connectivity opportunities for business and lesuire segments, plans for Summer 2013 call for three base aircraft operating to Faro and Malaga daily.

Aer Lingus will face competition on the London Gatwick route from Easyjet x 4 times daily (Belfast International) & Flybe x 5 times daily (Belfast City). In addition to Easyjet serving Luton x 3 daily & Stansted x 4 daily and Southend x 2 daily.

Aer Lingus will be competing aganist British Airways (Formerly BMI) to London Heathrow which is currently operating six times daily and is due to increase to seven daily for the winter schedule.

The Aer Lingus CEO Christoph Mueller stated "Northern Ireland’s vital London connections are secure with Aer Lingus, This is a commercial decision delivering value for our customers and the company. George Best Belfast City Airport delivers a compelling location and a strong history of business flying".

"We believe the move will appeal to the 600,000 plus passengers annually who fly with us and especially the business traveller who now has a choice of two London airports with Aer Lingus".

"Indeed business travellers based in the Belfast City Centre will now be able to substantially reduce transit times from office to aircraft. Customers who are members of our Gold Circle frequent flyer programme will also be able to use the business lounge facilities at George Best Belfast City Airport. We believe our dual offer of Heathrow and Gatwick supports the local marketplace during these challenging economic times".

The carrier plans to expand the base with future investment and new routes.

Aer Lingus to target GB market

18-October-2012
AER Lingus is to concentrate on its two routes to London from George Best Belfast City Airport rather than target sun destinations, the airline’s chief executive said yesterday.

Christophe Mueller made the comment yesterday during a visit to Belfast ahead of the airline’s move to Belfast City Airport from Belfast International Airport at the end of the month.

From October 28, Aer Lingus will operate three daily flights in each direction from Belfast to London Heathrow and also London Gatwick and at the end of next March will operate just two flights to Europe in its Summer schedule to Faro and Malaga.

When the move from Belfast International takes place, George Best City Airport, from where BA also flies to Heathrow, will provide the only Northern Ireland link to London’s main airport with 10 flights per day.

Aer Lingus has been operating flights to a range of European destinations including Alicante, Barcelona, Lanzarote, Malaga and Tenerife and Faro and also to London Heathrow since setting up a base at Belfast International Airport 5 years ago during which it has carried 2.7m passengers. However, the move to Belfast City Airport will see a substantial reduction in the number of routes operated by the airline to sun destinations.

Speaking to the News Letter, Mr Mueller said this was because of a change of strategy by the airline.

We believe our strategic mission is better achieved if we shift our focus to the GB market and target outbound and inbound passengers. We have become more and more successful in serving the business market and focusing on inbound and outbound passengers. Our main focus will now be on our routes in and out of Heathrow and Gatwick. The local economy is better served if we do this.

However, Mr Mueller did not rule out the prospect of additional flights to Europe in the future.

We never say never and will review the situation in light of economic conditions,” he added.

Aer Lingus to Introduce New Belfast – Palma Service

November 19, 2012

From 2nd April 2013 Aer Lingus will operate twice a week flights from George Best Belfast City Airport to Palma, Majorca, every Tuesday and Saturday. Flights will go on sale on Thursday 22nd November 2012. Aer Lingus will also re-launch daily flights to Malaga and Faro from 31stMarch.

Valerie Abbott, Commercial Director Northern Ireland, Aer Lingus

Valerie Abbott, Commercial Director Northern Ireland, said: “We are delighted to announce the addition of our new route to Palma to our 2013 summer schedule so early into the launch of our new base at Belfast City Airport.

Cosmopolitan Palma is the capital city of Majorca in the Balearic Islands and is the perfect destination for a beach holiday. The city is steeped in history and overflowing with little boutiques and restaurants, making it an ideal city break option. With the flight duration just less than two and a half hours, it’s the perfect family holiday destination.

We are also increasing frequency to London Gatwick from three to four times daily (excluding Saturdays). This will bring to 48 the number of weekly flights from Belfast to London Heathrow and Gatwick.

We have been overwhelmed by positive feedback since our move to Belfast City Airport from our customers and the trade alike.

Being voted ‘Best Airline ex-Belfast to Europe’, for the third year in a row, at the recent Northern Ireland Travel and Tourism Awards was a huge vote of confidence in our development strategy. Obviously we will continue to offer an award winning service. The launch of our new route is a sign of our continued commitment to the market and our customers.

We are committed to growing our business in Northern Ireland and will continue to explore further opportunities for the expansion of our network from George Best Belfast City Airport.
