Wizz Air sets up second Ukraine base at Donetsk
Adds first ever route to Kosice in Slovakia from London Luton

26-June-2013
Wizz Air Ukraine has announced that Donetsk will become the airline’s second base after Kiev Zhulyany, with a single A320 being based at the airport from 1 October. The airline has only just started serving the Ukraine airport, when it launched twice-weekly flights to Kutaisi in Georgia back in April. A second route to Dortmund is planned to start on 6 July. The new base will enable additional new routes to London Luton, Memmingen, Milan Bergamo and Rome Fiumicino to be launched in early October. Bergamo will be served with three weekly flights, the other new destinations with two each. Kutaisi flights will increase to five-times weekly. As a result Wizz Air Ukraine will be operating 16 weekly departures from Donetsk suggesting that the based aircraft will typically be operating just two return flights per day.

Last year Donetsk Airport handled around one million passengers, and according to Innovata schedule data for July, there are typically 18-20 daily departures. The leading airline is UTair Ukraine, with around one-third of all flights, followed by Ukraine International Airlines, Aeroflot and Dniproavia. Other than local and Russian carriers, the airport also has flights operated by Air Arabia (to Sharjah), flydubai (to Dubai), Lufthansa (to Munich), Pegasus Airlines (to Istanbul), and Turkish Airlines (also to Istanbul). Wizz Air Ukraine’s flights to Italy and the UK will be the first non-stop scheduled services to these countries from Donetsk.

Wizz Air returns to Slovakia; to launch Košice flights to London Luton
Wizz Air has also announced that it is returning to Slovakia after a three-year absence. Between September 2009 and January 2010 Wizz Air served Rome from Bratislava, but since then Slovakia has been conspicuous by its absence from Wizz Air’s route network. This is set to change, with the launch of twice-weekly flights from Wizz Air’s busiest airport, London Luton, to Košice in eastern Slovakia on 17 September. Frequency will increase to four weekly flights from the start of the winter season. Wizz Air will not be the first airline to operate between London and Košice. Between the end of October 2007 and the end of August 2009 (when it ceased all operations), Slovakia’s very own LCC, SkyEurope, operated between three and four weekly flights between Luton and Košice.
What was said

Speaking in Donetsk, Akos Bus, General Director of Wizz Air Ukraine said, “I am thrilled today to announce our second base in Donetsk. Wizz Air Ukraine has created and grown low cost air travel in Kiev to over 600,000 yearly passengers and we expect to carry up to one million passengers in both bases, Kiev and Donetsk, over the coming 12 months. Our commitment to the Ukraine is clear: we deliver reliable air traffic operations with very low fares to the consumer. Our passenger growth benefits those airports that offer lower costs and we welcome Donetsk Airport as the second base airport in Wizz Air Ukraine’s network. As long as low costs are offered, Wizz Air Ukraine expects to grow further in Kiev and in Donetsk.

Speaking in Košice, Jozsef Varadi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air said: “Today Košice is joining Europe’s most extended low fares network in terms of geographical reach. The route connecting Košice and London Luton will start operating in a bit more than two months and I am certain that it will be highly popular among Slovakian citizens. Wizz Air is committed to stimulate significant air traffic that benefits local economies, tourism industries and employment. As this year’s European Capital of Culture, Košice is generating an inflow of tourists and history lovers from all over the world. Individual travellers as well as families and businesses will welcome this exciting development and contribute to job creation and tourism development in Slovakia.

Wizz to fly to Tel Aviv from Lithuania, Poland and Romania

  • Wizz Air will start new routes this winter linking Tel Aviv with Vilnius, Katowice and Cluj-Napoca.
  • Wizz Air currently flies to Tel Aviv from Budapest and Bucharest.

9-July-2013
Flights to Vilnius (VNO) and Katowice (KTW) begin in late October. Cluj Napoca (CLJ) joins Wizz’s route map in late November. Wizz will fly twice-weekly to Vilnius and Cluj-Napoca and three times a week to Katowice.

Daniel de Carvalho, corporate communications manager, said Vilnius, Katowice and Cluj-Napoca are popular destinations for Israeli tourists.

"We are confident that the influx of tourists to the city of Tel Aviv will bring many benefits," he said.

"After success with Budapest and Bucharest... we expect similar interest from our customers in our new proposals."

Israel ratified a Common Aviation Area (CAA) agreement with Europe in April opening up flights to the country from across the EU.

For Cluj-Napoca airport, which serves Romania’s second largest city, the new route introduces scheduled services beyond Europe.

WIZZ AIR CONFIRMS WARSAW CHOPIN AIRPORT

Customers prefer Wizz Air’s base at Warsaw Chopin Airport
17/07/2013
Warsaw, 17 July 2013 - Wizz Air, the largest low-fare, low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, today announced that its temporary operations at Warsaw Chopin Airport will become permanent from tomorrow, 18 July. The airline is currently operating flights on 20 routes to 14 countries from Warsaw Chopin Airport.

In December last year Wizz Air made the unprecedented decision to temporarily move its operations from Modlin to Chopin airport during the Christmas period due to Modlin’s inability to comply with basic operational requirements needed to ensure smooth flight operations and reliable customer service. The failure of Modlin Airport to install the Instrument Landing System (ILS) before October 2012 caused major disruptions to Wizz Air’s operations resulting in delays, diversions or cancellations of 160 flights affecting over 30,000 passengers between October and December 2012. Problems with Modlin’s runway and the subsequent closure of the airport by the Polish Civil Aviation Authority gave Wizz Air no other choice, but to maintain temporary operations at Warsaw Chopin ever since.

Wizz Air is confident that its passengers will welcome the end of uncertainty caused by the runway closure at Modlin as many of them already expressed a clear preference for Warsaw Chopin Airport. A survey amongst 4,000 Wizz Air passengers revealed that over 70% of them dislike the poor accessibility of Modlin and feel that any savings on airfares are more than offset by the increased costs and time of travel to the airport. From Wizz Air’s perspective the lower airport fees of Modlin have been largely outweighed by high disruption costs, making Modlin a high cost airport. The lack of ILS and subsequent long closure of the runway undermined Wizz Air’s trust in Modlin, especially after the airport management’s continued reluctance to agree with Wizz Air on adequate and timely compensation for the period of massive flight disruptions due to the lack of ILS and for the period of temporary operations at Chopin due to Modlin runway closure. Following these latest developments Wizz Air now decided to begin permanent operations at Chopin Airport.

Wizz Air is committed to delivering the lowest airfares available at Warsaw Chopin and further growing its route network from the capital city. In the recent past the airline announced 5 new exciting routes to Kutaisi, Hurghada, Grenoble, Kharkov and Glasgow, to enhance its profile as the hometown low-cost carrier in Warsaw.

Wizz Air’s CEO, József Váradi said: “I am pleased today to give assurance and certainty to our passengers and crews who have been subject to unexpected airport changes due to the numerous shortcomings of Modlin Airport. We will keep bringing more new routes and more low fares to Warsaw Chopin Airport going forward as you would expect from your hometown airline.

Budapest Airport welcomes the latest Wizz Air aircraft

11-09-2013
Budapest Airport welcomes the latest announcement from Wizz Air on expanding its fleet stationed in Budapest and thereby adding further capacity at Budapest Airport as of the 2014 summer schedule. The new aircraft, an Airbus A320, will arrive in Budapest next spring.

Wizz Air’s brand new aircraft is due to arrive in Budapest on 14 March 2014, whereby the carrier’s fleet stationed at Budapest Airport will be expanded to 8 aircraft. With this development, Wizz Air is set to double its capacity in the space of just two years, and will further strengthen its prominent position in Hungarian aviation. Budapest Airport welcomes Wizz Air’s decision, whereby seat capacity on the carrier’s flights to and from Budapest will increase to 2.9 million annually.

According to Wizz Air’s announcement, they do not plan to launch any new flights from Budapest with the 8th aircraft, but will further strengthen their existing network of 35 destinations, and will increase weekly frequencies on a total of nine routes. As a result, Wizz Air will offer four flights a day to London, as well as more frequent services between Budapest and Eindhoven, Barcelona, Istanbul, Rome, Madrid, Catania, Malta and Bari.

Wizz Air will commission 11 brand new aircraft next year, so we at Budapest Airport are delighted that they have decided to deploy one of these Airbus A320s to Budapest, taking their fleet stationed at Budapest Airport to eight aircraft,” commented Kam Jandu, Chief Commercial Officer for Budapest Airport. “This decision demonstrates Wizz Air’s commitment to the Hungarian market. The additional capacity will bring more passengers to Budapest, which is beneficial both for the airport and for Hungarian tourism,” he added.

Wizz-Air va deschide o bază la Craiova
13.11.2013
